The older homes closer to downtown have settled frames and odd sizes, where careful measuring matters more than any product choice. What London's newer builds need most
A lot of London's growth has happened along the bypass corridor, and those houses share a pattern. Open floor plans, tall windows, and a great room wall of glass that faces whatever direction the lot allowed. That glass is the biggest hole in the home's insulation. On hot stretches it loads the room with heat all afternoon, and on cold nights it leaks warmth right back out.
The fix I recommend most in these houses is a honeycomb cellular shade. The cells trap a layer of air against the glass and slow heat moving in both directions. On a west-facing great room the difference is something you feel standing in the room, not a line on a brochure. Double cell insulates more than single cell, and I will tell you honestly which your windows justify rather than defaulting to the more expensive one.
What the older houses near downtown need
Closer to downtown, London has older homes with real character and the quirks that come with it. Frames settle. Openings that look identical measure a half inch different. A stock blind from a box store fits those windows the way an off-the-rack suit fits, which is to say almost.
Every window in an older house gets measured individually, to the sixteenth of an inch, and the order is built to those numbers. That is the whole difference between custom and stock, and it matters more in London's older housing stock than almost anywhere else I work.
Which products hold up in our climate?
Kentucky humidity is a year-round fact, and it decides a few things for you. In kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms, faux wood blinds and composite shutters shrug off moisture that will warp and swell natural wood over time. Real wood still earns its place in living rooms and dining rooms where its warmth shows and the air stays dry. Fabric shades belong in bedrooms and offices, away from steam.
Do you need blackout, light filtering, or something between?
Think room by room instead of buying one answer for the whole house. Bedrooms usually want room darkening or true blackout. Living spaces usually want light filtering that cuts glare without going dark. A home office wants glare control on the screen wall. This is exactly what the in-home consultation sorts out, because the right answer depends on which way each room faces and how you actually use it.
Where I would choose something else
If you have a rental property in London, skip the fabric and the upgrades and put cordless faux wood blinds in every unit. They survive turnover, they clean fast, and replacing one slat is cheap. And if a room already stays comfortable and dark enough for you, keep what is on the window. I would rather tell you that in your living room than sell you something you do not need.
Motorization is worth considering on tall parkway-corridor windows
Those two-story great rooms come with a practical problem: the top row of windows is out of reach without a ladder. Motorized shades solve that with a remote, a phone app, or a schedule, and I program and group every motor on install day so a single button runs the whole wall. For a first floor with normal windows, cordless manual lift does the job for less, and I will say so when that is the honest answer.
What to have ready before I arrive
You do not need to prepare much. Know which rooms bother you most, whether glare, heat, privacy, or all three, and have an idea of your budget for this round. Plenty of London families do the bedrooms first and the living spaces a few months later, and phasing like that costs nothing extra.
