The short answer: Plantation shutters suit Chevy Chase and Ashland Park better than almost any other treatment, but only when they are built to each individual window frame. These houses have settled for close to a century, so no two openings measure the same. Stock shutters off a shelf will fight the house. Custom-built panels, matched to your trim and squared to your actual frame, look like they were always there.
What a century of settling does to a window
The brick and plaster homes in Chevy Chase and Ashland Park were built with real materials on real foundations, and then they moved. Every old house does. Frames rack a little, sills dip a quarter inch on one side, and openings that started square end up slightly trapezoidal. You cannot see it by eye, but a rigid shutter panel finds it instantly. Hang a perfectly square panel in a not-square opening and you get uneven gaps, light leaks, and panels that swing open on their own. This is why I measure every opening in six places before anything gets built. Width at the top, middle, and bottom. Height at both sides and the center. Depth of the reveal, condition of the sill, and how the sashes sit. Ten minutes of measuring per window is what separates shutters that look inevitable from shutters that look installed.
Built to the frame, not off a size chart
The plantation shutters I install are made to the exact dimensions of your specific window, including its quirks. If the opening is a half inch wider at the top, the frame is built to absorb that so the panels still hang plumb and close clean. That is the entire difference between custom and stock. A stock shutter assumes your window matches a factory chart. In these neighborhoods, it never does. Custom also means real choices on louver size, and in rooms with tall glass I usually split the tilt so you can open the top louvers for light while the lower ones stay closed for privacy from the sidewalk. On the street-facing rooms that matters daily, because these neighborhoods walk. Dogs, strollers, joggers, all passing a few feet from your front windows every evening.
Deep reveals are an advantage here
One thing these older Lexington homes have that new construction rarely does: deep window reveals. Thick masonry walls leave a generous pocket, and a shutter mounted inside that pocket sits flush and looks original to the house. The panels tuck into the depth instead of protruding into the room. I build the shutter frame to the depth of your reveal, so the louvers clear any window hardware and the panels open fully without slapping the casing. There is a comfort benefit hiding in there too. A shutter closed inside a deep masonry reveal traps a pocket of still air against the glass, which takes the edge off the draft these original windows give up on cold nights. Owners notice it in the front rooms first.
Matching the trim profile you already have
Original millwork is the soul of these houses, and a shutter should defer to it. I pay attention to the casing profile, the sill horns, and how the paint build sits on the wood. The shutter frame style gets chosen to sit inside or against that trim without covering the details you want to see. Color matters just as much. Bright factory white next to hundred-year-old painted trim can clash. I color-match to your existing trim paint so the shutter reads as part of the woodwork, not an appliance bolted onto it.
Why do stock shutters disappoint in older Lexington homes?
Because every shortcut shows. Stock panels come in fixed widths, so installers shim and pad to force a fit, and you end up with wide filler strips that shout aftermarket. The gaps let in light streaks at night. The panels bind in humid weeks when the old frame swells. And cheap louvers sag over time in tall panels. In a newer house with true openings, stock can be passable. In Ashland Park it rarely is. Where I would talk you out of shutters
I love shutters, but not everywhere. On a huge picture window, panels can chop up a view that a clean roller shade would preserve. In a tight galley kitchen where a swinging panel would hit the faucet or a cabinet, a shade is friendlier. And if your window frames have active rot or badly failing paint, fix the wood first. I would rather delay a sale than screw a beautiful shutter into a frame that needs a carpenter. I will tell you that at the consult, plainly.
