This question comes up on almost every consultation, and the honest answer disappoints people twice over. I would still rather give it to you straight than let you find out from your tax preparer.
The short answer
No. The federal credit people are thinking of has ended for 2026 work. And even while it existed, it never covered blinds, shades, or shutters.
Those are two separate facts, and you need both of them. Let me take them one at a time.
What the credit actually covered
The credit in question was the Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. It was real, and homeowners used it for years.
For windows, it worked like this. You could claim 30 percent of the cost of qualifying exterior windows and skylights, capped at $600 per year. To qualify, the product had to meet the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient criteria.
Read that description again. Exterior windows and skylights. The glass unit installed in the wall. The credit covered the window itself, not what you hang in front of it.
Interior window coverings were never on that list. Blinds, shades, shutters, and drapery did not qualify under Section 25C at any point. A cellular shade genuinely reduces heat transfer at the glass, but the tax code did not classify it as qualifying energy property, and no amount of marketing language changed that.
What changed for 2026
Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Section 25C credit was repealed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
That is a clean cutoff. Even the exterior windows and skylights that did qualify no longer earn the credit if they were placed in service in 2026. The trigger is when the product went in, not when you file your return.
So for any window work done this year, there is no Section 25C credit to claim, for glass or for coverings.
If your work was done in 2025
If you had qualifying exterior windows or skylights installed and placed in service on or before December 31, 2025, you may still be able to claim the credit on your 2025 return.
Hold onto two documents. The paid invoice showing the cost and the install date, and the manufacturer certification statement for the specific product. Your preparer will want both.

Why you still see shade tax credit ads
You will still find companies advertising a tax credit on shades. Some of that language has been running for years without anyone checking it.
If you see a claim like that, ask one direct question. Which code section, and how is the product classified under it. If the answer is a shrug or a link to a generic energy page, you have learned what you needed to know.
A promotion is a promotion. If a company wants to take money off the price, that is a discount, and there is nothing wrong with a discount. Calling it a federal credit is a different thing entirely, and it puts the homeowner in a bad spot at filing time.
The savings case that does not need a credit
Here is the part I actually like talking about, because it stands up on its own.
Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, are built with sealed pockets of air running the width of the shade. That trapped air is the insulator. Your conditioned air no longer meets cold or hot glass directly. It meets a dead air layer first, and heat moves through dead air slowly. Double cell constructions stack a second row of pockets and slow that transfer further.
Windows are the weak spot in almost any exterior wall. A Kentucky home deals with hard afternoon glare, high humidity, and UV that fades flooring and upholstery over time. A cellular shade at the glass pushes back on all three at once. It cuts heat gain coming in, slows heat loss going out, and knocks down the UV reaching your furniture.
Most people feel it before they see it on a bill. The cold zone near the window goes away. West-facing rooms stop turning into an oven in the afternoon. That comfort change happens every day you own them, and it does not depend on anything in the tax code.
What actually drives the performance
If energy is your main reason for buying, a few choices count far more than the rest.
Start with cell structure. Double cell holds more still air than single cell. Cell size counts too, and smaller cells in a double stack generally outperform one large cell.
Then fabric. A blackout cellular fabric with a reflective inner layer blocks more radiant heat than a light filtering fabric. You trade daylight for it, so that choice is room by room.
Fit does the most work of all, and this is where a lot of energy claims quietly come undone. A shade with a half inch gap down each side is letting air move right around the insulating layer. Side channels close that gap. A tight, correctly deducted inside mount closes most of it. A well executed outside mount overlaps the opening and closes it too. This is a big part of why we laser measure every opening instead of estimating.
Configuration helps too. Top down bottom up shades let you drop the fabric from the top for daylight while keeping the lower glass covered, which helps in rooms that take hard direct sun but that you still want bright.
