The short answer: Lexington's sticky air is why faux wood blinds have become the default here for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Wood is a bundle of fibers that swells and shrinks as moisture moves in and out of it, and enough of those cycles will bow a painted slat. A faux wood slat absorbs essentially nothing, so the same air that ruins wood cannot touch it. Here is how the damage actually happens.
What humidity actually does inside a wood slat
I am Drew Farley, and I measure and install our Lexington jobs myself, which means I also get the service calls when a blind goes bad. Here is the mechanism. Wood is made of long fibers that soak up water vapor from the air. As the fibers absorb moisture they swell, mostly across the grain, and as the air dries they shrink back. A slat never absorbs evenly. The face near the glass lives in different conditions than the face toward the room, the sealed surfaces take on less than the drilled ladder holes and cut ends, and those imbalances put a permanent curve into the slat over time. That is why a bad slat bows or twists instead of staying flat and simply growing. The damage is cumulative and it does not reverse when the air dries out.
Why can't paint or sealer stop the warping?
People assume a painted slat is a sealed slat. It is not, quite. Finishes slow moisture exchange, but water vapor still passes through paint and lacquer slowly, and every blind has unsealed spots where the route holes are drilled and the slats are cut to width. Worse, once a slat starts flexing, hairline cracks open in the finish and the process speeds up. So a finish buys time, and a good finish buys a lot of time, but in a room that stays damp it is a delay, not a cure. This is why the failures I see cluster in the same rooms over and over regardless of blind brand.
Why faux wood does not care
A faux wood blind slat is a solid composite or PVC material with no fiber structure to swell. There is nothing in it that absorbs water vapor in any meaningful amount, no grain direction to warp across, and no finish layer whose failure exposes raw material underneath, because the color runs through the slat. You can hang one in a bathroom that fogs the mirror twice a day, and the slat simply does not participate in the moisture cycle happening around it. That indifference is the entire product. It is not prettier than wood or lighter than wood. It is immune to the specific thing our air does to wood.
The Lexington rooms where this decides everything
Around Lexington I spec faux wood almost automatically in full bathrooms, kitchens with a sink under the window, laundry rooms, and finished basements, which run damper than the floors above them all year. I would add poorly ventilated bathrooms in older homes in Chevy Chase and Ashland Park to the top of that list, because charming old houses often have the least airflow where they need it most. In the newer builds out in Hamburg and Masterson Station the ventilation is better, but a garden tub under a big window is still a garden tub under a big window, and I spec it like the wet zone it is.
Will faux wood blinds turn yellow?
The old ones did, and that reputation lingers. Early PVC slats yellowed under UV exposure, especially in strong south and west light. The quality faux wood we install now is made with UV inhibitors mixed into the material, and yellowing on a modern quality slat is no longer the expected outcome. Bargain-bin faux wood is another story, and a south-facing window is exactly where the cheap version shows its age first. If a blind is going to sit in strong sun all day, this is a spot where paying for the better slat is the whole game.
Where real wood still earns its place
My honesty note: I still sell and recommend real wood blinds, and in the right room I would choose them myself. Dry, conditioned rooms, which is most bedrooms, offices, and living rooms in a modern house, will not push enough moisture into a wood slat to hurt it. Real wood is lighter to lift on big windows and takes true stains that sit beautifully next to the original woodwork in Lexington's older neighborhoods. The mistake is not choosing wood. The mistake is choosing it for a room that spends its life damp. Match the material to the room's moisture and both products perform.
Living with them in sticky air
Faux wood's other advantage in our climate is that humidity makes dust sticky, and sticky dust needs damp cleaning that wood does not love.
