The short answer: Cellular shades and solar roller fabric are the two products that do real work on a cooling bill, and everything else is a distant third. The cellular shade slows heat at the glass with trapped air. The solar fabric blocks the sun's radiant load before it lands on your floor. The trick is matching the product to the window's exposure instead of buying one thing for the whole house, and that is how I spec every job I measure in Murray.
How heat actually gets into a Murray house
Your walls have insulation. Your windows are the hole in it. Sunlight passes through glass, lands on floors and furniture, turns into heat, and that heat cannot get back out. The room warms, the thermostat notices, and the air conditioner runs. The bigger the glass and the more direct the sun, the harder the system works. That is why the same house feels fine on the north side and stuffy on the west side by late afternoon. Any shade that interrupts this chain, either at the glass or before the light lands, takes load off the air conditioner. A shade that does neither is decoration. Glass also conducts heat the way any thin material does, but on most houses I visit here, the radiant path, sunlight becoming trapped heat, is the bigger driver of the cooling bill. That is the path a good shade attacks.
Cellular shades: the air pocket does the work
A honeycomb shade is built from fabric cells that trap a layer of still air across the window. Still air is a poor conductor of heat, which is the same reason a thermos has a double wall. Lower the shade and the hot glass has to push heat through that air blanket before it reaches the room. The same pocket works in reverse when it is cold out, slowing indoor heat from escaping, so it is the one product earning its keep in both directions. Solar roller fabric for the west glass
On west-facing windows, especially out on the Kentucky Lake side where light also bounces off the water, the problem is radiant load. A solar roller shade uses a tight technical weave that rejects a large share of that sunlight while still letting you see through it. The floor never heats up, so the room never turns into a radiator, and you keep the view. It is a daytime tool. It does very little for insulation at night, which is why the honest answer is often cellular in most rooms and solar fabric on the hot wall. Color matters more than people expect, too. Darker solar fabrics give a clearer view through the weave, while lighter fabrics bounce more light back out. On a bright water view I hold both up at the actual window before you choose, because the difference is hard to picture and easy to see.
Do cellular shades really lower cooling bills?
Yes, through a mechanism you can feel with your hand, and I will not dress it up with invented numbers. Touch a sunny window at four in the afternoon, then touch the room-side face of a lowered cellular shade on the same window. The glass is hot. The shade face is not. Heat that never enters the room is heat the air conditioner never has to remove, so the system cycles less on the same sort of day. How much that shows up on your bill depends on your glass, your exposures, and how you set your thermostat, and anyone quoting you an exact savings figure without seeing your house is guessing.
A window-by-window plan for Murray exposures
Here is how I walk a house, the same way I would at your consultation.
- West windows get the first dollar. Strongest load, longest exposure, worst timing. Solar fabric or blackout-lined cellular, and on the lake side I lean solar to keep the view.
- South windows collect steady light most of the day. Cellular shades here do quiet, consistent work.

- North windows carry almost no direct sun. Spend on looks here, not on energy features you will not use.
Single cell or double cell, honestly
Double cell fabric stacks two smaller pockets instead of one, which insulates somewhat better and costs somewhat more. On big glass in a room you condition all day, it is worth it. On a small window, or in that north-facing room, the single cell does the job and the upgrade money is better spent moving another window up the list. A salesman who puts double cell on every window of the house is optimizing his invoice, not your utility bill. Ask to hold both fabrics at the consultation. The difference is obvious in your hand, and so is the judgment call about where it earns its price.
What a shade cannot fix
Some of what people call a hot house is not a window problem. Thin attic insulation, leaky ductwork, and worn weatherstripping will erase what a good shade accomplishes, and I would rather tell you that in your hallway than have you disappointed at the meter. There are also rooms where I would not sell you an energy shade at all. A shaded north-facing den does not need one, and a garage window does not deserve one. Shades are the affordable piece of the comfort puzzle, and they work best when the rest of the house is not fighting them.
