Can You Motorize Blinds You Already Own?

The honest answer is sometimes

I get this question every few weeks. Somebody has decent blinds or shades, they are tired of pulling cords, and they want to know if a motor can be added to what is already hanging there. The answer is that it depends on the product, and I would rather tell you that up front than sell you a kit that ends up in a drawer.

Retrofit motor kits are real, they work, and on the right product they are a smart use of money. On the wrong product they are slow, loud, and unreliable, and you end up buying the shade you should have bought in the first place. Here is how I sort out which one you have.

What has to line up for a retrofit to work

Five things decide it.

  • The product type. Roller shades and some cellular shades are the realistic candidates. Most other things are not.
  • The manufacturer. Some brands sell a factory retrofit motor built for their own tube and their own brackets. That is the best case. Universal kits exist, but they ask you to adapt hardware that was never designed to accept a motor.
  • The tube or headrail. A roller motor has to slide inside the tube, so the inside diameter has to fit. Older shades often use a narrow tube that nothing modern fits. A cellular shade needs a headrail with room for a motor and a battery, and a slim headrail may simply not have it.
  • Weight and width. Every motor has a torque rating. A wide, tall, blackout roller is heavy, and a light duty retrofit motor will crawl, stall partway, or wear out early. Narrow and light is where retrofits shine.
  • How the lift was built. A shade with a clutch and a bead chain is usually convertible, because you remove the clutch and the motor takes its place. A cordless shade with an internal tensioned lift assembly is fighting you, since that mechanism has to be defeated or removed before a motor can move anything.

What almost never retrofits well

Horizontal wood and faux wood blinds are the big one. Those blinds have to lift and tilt, and the tilt mechanism and lift cords packed inside a standard headrail were never built to accept a motor. There are motorized blinds from the factory that do this beautifully. Adding it later to a blind you already own is rarely worth it.

Shutters do not motorize at all in any practical way. Roman shades with a cord lift can sometimes be converted, but the mechanism has to be rebuilt and at that point you are paying most of the price of a new shade. And anything already worn out is a poor host for a new motor. If the fabric is faded, the hem is fraying, or the shade is out of level, a motor will not save it.

When a retrofit is a good idea

I recommend it when the shades are relatively new, they are the right product type, and there are only a handful of them. A few good quality roller shades in a family room, five years old, still crisp, running on a chain you are tired of pulling. That is a clean job. Same for a run of cellular shades on a stair landing where getting to them is the whole problem.

It is also worth it when the windows are difficult to reach or the shade is doing a job you care about, like a stairwell, a two story great room, or a window behind a sofa nobody can climb over.

When replacing is cheaper and more reliable

Once you are past six or eight windows, run the numbers both ways before you commit. Retrofit kits are priced per shade, and by the time you have bought a motor for every opening you are often close to the cost of new motorized shades that come out of the factory with the motor already inside, sized to the shade, matched to the fabric weight, and covered by one warranty.

Factory built motorized shades are also quieter, and the difference is not small. The motor sits in a tube built for it, the fabric is balanced to that motor, and the whole thing was tested as one unit. A retrofit is a good motor doing its best inside hardware that was designed for a chain.

Replace, not retrofit, when the shades are more than eight or ten years old, when the fabric is sun damaged, when the shades are oversized or heavy, or when the brand no longer supports the parts. You can see the range of factory options on our motorization page.

Battery or hardwired, at a high level

Retrofit motors are almost always battery powered, which is exactly why they are attractive. There is no wire to pull, no electrician, and no drywall repair. You charge or change the battery on a cycle that depends on the size of the shade and how often it runs.

Hardwired power is the better long term answer for a large group of shades or for anything running several times a day, and it is far easier to do during construction or a remodel than after. If you are weighing the two seriously, that is a longer conversation and it deserves its own sit down. The short version is that a small retrofit project points to battery, and a whole house project is worth pricing with power in mind.

Programming, grouping, and testing on install day

Adding the motor is the easy half. The half people underestimate is setting it up so it behaves.

Every motor gets upper and lower limits set by hand. That is where the shade stops at the top and where it stops at the bottom, and getting the bottom limit right is what keeps a group of shades looking level across a wall. On a retrofit this takes longer than on a factory shade, because the hardware is not always where the motor expects it to be.

Then comes grouping. You decide which shades move together. A common setup is one button for the whole room, one for a smaller group of lake or street facing windows, and individual control for anything you adjust on its own. We also set favorite positions, so a single press takes the shade to a halfway point you actually use rather than all the way down.

Before we leave, we run every shade through a full cycle several times, check that they stop level with each other, hand you the remotes, and walk you through changing a limit yourself. If the shades are joining a hub or an app, we pair them and confirm they respond before the truck moves.
