Why bay and bow windows give people so much trouble
A bay or bow window is usually the best feature in the room and the hardest one to cover. Homeowners try a store bought solution, it does not fit, and the window sits bare for a year. I understand it. These windows break every rule a flat window follows.
A bay is typically three sections, a wide flat pane in the middle with two angled sections on either side, often at thirty or forty five degrees. A bow is a gentle curve made of four, five, or six equal sections, each one turned a few degrees from the next. In both cases you are working with corners that are not ninety degrees, mullions between every section, sections that are rarely the same width, and often a seat or a deep sill under the whole thing.
None of that is a problem once it is planned for. It is only a problem when someone treats it like one big window.
Every section is its own window
This is the rule that decides the whole job. I measure each section separately, top, middle, and bottom of every opening, and I measure the angle at each corner. In an older Kentucky home I frequently find sections that vary by half an inch or more across a single bay, and angles that are not what the plan says they are.
If you order all three sections at the same width because they look identical, one of them binds and one of them leaves a gap. That is the single most common reason a bay window treatment looks wrong. A laser measure and ten extra minutes at the consultation prevent it.
Option one: individual shades in each section
This is the most common answer and usually the least expensive. Each section gets its own shade, mounted inside its own opening. Roller, cellular, roman, or woven wood all work.
The advantages are real. You control each section on its own, so you can drop the shade on the section taking direct sun and leave the others up. Nothing collides with anything. If one shade is ever damaged, you replace one shade.
The thing to watch is the mullion. The vertical post between sections eats up width, and on a bay with heavy trim you can lose enough of the opening that a narrow section ends up looking crowded. Headrails also have to be small enough to fit the depth of the opening. On shallow bays I will sometimes go with cellular shades, which have one of the slimmest headrails available and hold their shape well.
Option two: shutters built to the angles
Shutters are the treatment bay windows were made for, and this is where custom work earns its keep. Panels are built to each section, and the frames are made with the actual corner angle so the whole run reads as one piece of furniture wrapping the window.
Two details make or break it. The first is the corner post. A bay needs a specialty post at each angle that closes the joint between two frames, and there is more than one style depending on the angle and how much light you want to seal. The second is the hinge side. Panels have to swing without hitting each other or the section next to them, which drives how many panels each section gets and which direction they open.
Shutters also fix the light gap problem better than anything else, because the frame closes off the angled joint instead of leaving it open. If you want the bay to look built in rather than dressed, plantation shutters are the answer.
Option three: continuous drapery on a bendable rod
Sometimes you want the bay to read as one soft sweep, especially in a formal front room. A flexible or bendable rod curves to follow the angles of the bay or the arc of a bow, and drapery panels ride across the whole run on a single track.
This looks beautiful and it comes with tradeoffs. Drapery covers the glass or it does not, so you lose the section by section control. You need wall or ceiling clearance for the rod and for the stack of fabric when the panels are open. And if there is a window seat, you have to decide whether the panels break at the seat or hang to the floor outside it.
The setup I like most is a hybrid. Simple shades inside each section for light control, then stationary drapery panels at the outer edges for softness. You get the function from the shades and the look from the fabric, and nothing has to do two jobs at once. Our drapery installation page covers how we hang and dress those panels.
Light gaps at the angles, and what to do about them
Every inside mount shade leaves a small gap on each side. On a flat window nobody notices. On a bay, the gaps at the angled corners point straight at each other, and you get two thin lines of light meeting in the corner where your eye already goes.
There are a few ways to handle it. Shutters with proper corner posts close the joint outright. Side channels on a shade capture the edge of the fabric and cut the gap down to almost nothing, which is the right call in a bedroom bay where somebody is trying to sleep. Or you accept the gap, which is completely fine in a living room where you were never after full darkness.
What you should not do is order the shades a half inch wide to close the gap. They will rub the frame and eventually the fabric will show it.
Operating clearance, seat depth, and cranks
Bay windows hide obstructions. Casement cranks stick out into the opening, and a shade mounted inside will sit on top of one unless the crank is accounted for or a low profile handle is used. A window seat changes where the bottom rail lands and whether cushions push against the shade. Deep sills change how far a headrail can be recessed.
Panels are the other clearance question. Two panels swinging out of a narrow angled section will meet in midair if the layout is not drawn ahead of time. That is a decision made at the consultation, on paper, before anything is ordered.
What happens when I come out
For a bay or bow I sketch the window, note the angle at each corner, and measure every section at three heights. We talk about what the room is used for, whether you need darkness or only glare control, and whether anything in that bay opens. Then you see samples in the light that window actually gets, which for an angled window changes several times through the day.
Everything is built to those numbers and installed by our own crew. Drop cloths go down, the panels get adjusted on site so they close evenly, and we take the packaging with us.
